He says he doesn't want to spend and then goes on to say :

"We've scored 44 goals and conceded 22 - 11 on set- pieces," said Wenger. "It's too high, because 14 goals is the price you're prepared to pay when you score so many. We're eight goals above [that] number. It is a problem that we will address and correct very quickly. We're a little bit short and we're a little bit inexperienced. If you have a team of 30-year-old players that doesn't happen to you."

Yah....no big defensive signing....

The squad is well covered in midfield and attack, and the defence may well be detrimental factor again. Some cultured signings there would go down a treat. We have potential there, but that is not what we need if we want immediate champions league success.

bollocks; hill-wood said arsenal have already signed someone. not someone famous, but really good. "think vieira" he said...

i think edu will leave us and mascherano will join us.

there will be a seasoned defender coming in. if edu does not sign, a seasoned midfielder will come in. wenger is just doing the usual, turning the media off to us before blindsiding them with a 7 million pound double salvo.

and by the way, welcome back adam. i am guessing you're back home for the christmas break. was wondering where you were for a while.

I totally agree with Adam. We know from past experience that Wenger deliberately provides disinformation when the transfer chase is on.

And we know that earlier this season he stressed the need for more defensive cover in the January window. The performances since then will have hardly changed his mind!

I'm thinking a defender first and foremost. But possibly a midfielder too, although the performances of Cesc and Flamini have understandably altered that somewhat.

Wenger last year in the January transfer window,

"We are 90% sure we won't buy anyone and it won't be big"

The next day....we bought Reyes.

King?

By the way, is there any way you could send a email to some scout in Arsenal if you want to tip about a player?

no, i don't think so. he wouldn't say who it was. it was someone really good, but not famous. he said "think vieira". damn, if i only could remember where i read it. thought it was thisislondon.com, but i couldn't find the interview there.

besides, this was after eboue was "revealed", so i guess it's someone else.

I saw it on Arseblog and ANR. Doubt it's Eboue. "Think Vieira" narrows it down a bit. My guess would be:

Yaya
Mascherano
Gravesen
King
De Rossi

Yaya has been called a Vieira type of player by Kolo.

BBC once had an article about Mascherano as a "mini Vieira". Still don't believe he's the one. Could be a possible signing if Edu leaves, but not for now..

De Rossi is famous and out of the question. I don't see him as Vieira kind of player.

Gravesen - can't see Wenger having signed him. Anyway, I think a Gravesen signing done would have hit the medias somehow.

King. Too expensive. Wenger has already ruled him out. Can't imagine Sp**s letting him go with Jol building a new team.

What about this other Ivorian, Marco Né? Unkown, already been at trial, central midfielder.
