It feels a bit off to use a statistic to praise 2 certain players on a defensive record but beat a keeper with a stick using the same metric.
Except that there are separate goalkeeping metrics that show him to be an average keeper whereas Gabriel and Saliba's individual records show them to be elite defenders. So while Ramsdale is part of the overall defensive metric, he's not the driver of it and it's telling that his metrics are average with elite defenders in front of him while Raya had elite metrics last year with average defenders in front of him.

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree. For me I'm not seeing the similarity with replacing one player and in the start of the season disrupting a central defence.

Still, it is the manager's call. It is his neck that is on the line if the results are not up to scratch. So far you'd have to say he's done the business resultwise for us.
You have to pay for a subscription to read Bernd Leno’s latest interview in full so I only saw the headline where he refers to keepers needing consistency in goal to develop relationships with players during matches. It’s true all over the pitch to an extent.

He also did enough to be named in the team of the season.

Pavel Nedved won a Ballon d'Or over Thierry Henry despite having a considerably worse season. Human beings vote in a subjective manner. The players voted him in the team of the season. It doesn't change the fact that he's statistically average. I promise you none of them actually looked at his metrics before voting.

You're making a bunch of statements based on feelings. I'm speaking about the facts of his level of performance that we can see backed up by data. No amount of circling around the issue you do will change the fact that Raya is statistically the better keeper.

You can say that for all players.

You can call what I said a statement if you like but it doesn’t stop it from being a fact that Ramsdale was in the team of the season.

A gentle reminder that your first response to me for this conversation was to this message.

It might be a bit like finding people who agree with dropping a keeper that served us admirably last season.

Which I said in response to this message.

You may try to rationalise it, and that is fine, but you'd struggle to find many that agrees with breaking up a central defence that served us admirably last season.

You can see that we’re talking about peoples opinions - not data.

A gentle reminder that you form an opinion either based upon your feelings or based upon data and I merely pointed out to you that one group was basing their opinion about breaking up a partnership on data and the other group is basing their opinion on dropping a goalkeeper on feelings. Therefore it isn't the apples to apples comparison that you're trying to present it as because one is an informed opinion backed by something tangible and the other is not. If I present you an opinion based on my empirical understanding of gravity that's not the same as me presenting an opinion that the earth is flat based on a feeling I have which controverts observable reality.

Apologies if the ‘gentle reminder’ comment came across as condescending; it was 06:18am on a Sunday here and I still haven’t come around yet so I don’t have much energy to continue defending my original comment, especially when I don’t have an issue with Arteta picking who he thinks is the best keeper. Nor do I have an issue with the current backline. I simply understand what I perceive the reasoning to be for Arteta choosing the central defenders that he did for the start of the season as him choosing what he thinks is best for the team: hence it is an apples to apples comparison as they’re both what the manager thinks is best.

He's helped so much by his great ability to recover but his passing was awful today.
