World Cup Nostalgia

This is the first game I remember growing up being genuinely invested in

That's what I love about World Cup summers. Always brings back memories of previous World Cups.

1994 was the first one for me, but 1998, 2006 and 2014 are probably the ones I have the fondest memories of.

Watched many highlights of 1990 and 1986 and always feel a bit sad that I was too young to experience them when they happened.

Italia 90 the first one I really remember. The year of Toto Schillaci.

Costa Rica v Scotland and as per usual getting beat by some minnow. Then a victory against a good Sweden side, followed by the inevitable defeat to Brazil where Murdo Macleod got knocked unconscious from a Brazilian free kick. Health and Safety? Meh. The ref didn't even stop the game, Brazil kicked the ball out for him to be brought round with smelling salts and then he went on to finish the game.

I also got this mini football, if memory serves me correctly you had to collect Coca Cola ring pulls (remember them?) and sent them off and you got one of these in return

USA 94 will was the first WC I can remember so I'll always have fond memories of it. It was proper weird though.

Escobar getting killed for a scoring the the OG, Diana Ross missing an open goal in the opening ceremony ceremony. Bulgaria being really good. Maradona getting busted for drugs. Jack Charlton going crazy on the touchline constantly.

2002 was my first World Cup. Saw the matches at school, was a cool experience.

That disallowed from Wilmots against Brazil still haunts me to this day and the name Peter Prendergast will never be forgotten.

I was thinking about this after watching his documentary. People always talk about Gerrard, Lampard or Scholes - but Beckham at the time was better than all of them. It mainly became about Gerrard and Lampard cause Becks left the country, while Scholes became the nostalgia pick later on.

86 was the first world cup I watched any of, but it was Italia 90 that I saw most of. Cameroon, Yugoslavia, diving Germans vs diving Argentinians, Ray Houghton, David Platt, Carlos Valderama's hair...great stuff. Also 2 amazing songs - world in motion and the deeply unofficial 'touched by the hand of cicciolina'....Was a great time in an amazing couple of years that were so full of hope....
...Arsenal champions twice, Fall of the Berlin wall, end of the prospect of Nuclear war, End of Apartheid, the downfall of Thatcher and the defeat of the poll tax, the first real availability of home computers that were multifunctional, the end of cages at football grounds, football suddenly being socially acceptable again, The Windies still stuffing everyone at cricket despite having a fraction of the population and resources etc etc.

The only sad part about the memory is how disappointing so much politically has been since then.

But I always love the world cup, even if I try not to.

Watching south Korea beat Spain while skiving off work, randomly surrounded by South Koreans in a tapas bar in West London. Watching South Africa score that amazing goal in the opening game of their own world cup, Cameroon had beating Argentina in 1990 despite only having 9 men, right up to the mad final last time out.

Definitely, considering the teams and players who were there it should've been probably the best WC in the last 30 or so years yet it was the worst.

I was looking at the squads from 2002 and honestly those Argentina and Italy teams were the best they’ve been from the 90s until now.

Argentina should’ve also won 2006 if Pekerman didn’t leave Zanetti and Samuel at home for no reason then bottled the German game taking Ballon d’Or level Riquelme off.

Italians should’ve kept Zoff after Euro 2000. Trappatoni is one of the most overrated international managers going.

86 . i was a kid and my grandpa had just got a color tv. it was summer vacation and my mom took me to stay at her parents for a couple of months. the state tv channel was broadcasting all games free to air.

still think its the best tournament ever.

I remember some of 86 but 90 is when I really got into it. And then three tenors as the opening theme on tv.
