First reaction from me: who?

apparently highly rated defensive midfielder who's a bit older than the usual frenchmen wenger goes for but sounds good....

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.goal.com/en/news/1722/french-ligue-1/2009/02/04/1094059/report-lille-starlet-yohan-cabaye-tracked-by-arsenal" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.goal.com/en/news/1722/french ... by-arsenal</a>

anyone else more informed than me?

I think he's been linked to us before, I seem to remember seeing that picture on here before. If I recall correctly everyone was delighted, until they found out he wasn't the huge fella on the picture (the one in the goal article), but the small guy.

Still interesting though, 23 is still a young age, but players are usually more developed and consistent at that point. Flamini wasn't more than 23 last season either, as I recall.

The lowdown on Arsenal target Yohan Cabaye

05/02/2009

Despite the close of the January transfer window just days ago, reports in France suggest that Arsène Wenger is keen on signing Lille midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

The 23-year-old central midfielder has established himself as one of the best in his position in French football. Cabaye predominantly provides drive and aggression in the Lille centre midfield; he can also play as a defensive midfielder or on the right hand side.

Cabaye is contracted to Lille until 2012/2013 and is believed to be worth around seven million euros. He has spent his whole career at Lille and has been a regular in the first team squad over the past four seasons.

Recent reports in France have also claimed that Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux are also scouting the Lille midfielder.

During the 2008/2009 campaign, Cabaye has made 20 appearances, scored three goals and provided one assist. His aggressive style of play has also brought seven yellow cards.

According to IMScouting’s network of scouts in France, the 5.7ft central midfielder is "one of the best players in the team and one of the most important. Technical and fast, he has a superb spirit."

5'7"? C'mon. Unless this guy has the leap of god, we should go for at least 1 midfielder that has some height to him.

Flams was 5'10". that's better than 5'7"

but i would prefer if we got someone at least 6ft if at all possible

You can't get everything though. Flamini wasn't that big, but his aggression, work rate, tenacity and precise and fast passing made him very good anyway. Sure, if we could get all those attributes and a midfielder that's 7'0 it would be perfect, but I don't think he's out there.

If only shaquille o'neal played soccer eh... :D

Though his free kicks wouldn't be worth s**t.

Makelele was 5"7, and he is arguably the best specialist DM of the last decade.

The thing I'm worried about is that with a midfield in which the tallest player is 5'10'' (a decent height, to be fair), every goal kick is another chance for the opposing team.

This is the picture that Viking was referring to:

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.nancarrow-webdesk.com/warehouse/storage2/2007-w51/img.94934_t.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.nancarrow-webdesk.com/wareho ... 4934_t.jpg</a>

I remember drooling at the thought of that big guy coming in and terrorizing guys like Gerrard and Lampard. I haven't really followed Cabaye. I'd hope that if we were to bring him in, then he would clearly be better than Denilson/Diaby/Song, rather than just get in the way of their progress.

That's Moustapha Sall. He's an interesting one actually. Taller than Peter Crouch, more physical than Yaya Touré. Hard to say how good he is right now though. Don't know much about either his passing or his technique. He hasn't played much this season due to a four-month ban.

 Can you shed a light on this please!
Did he eat someone up or something?

It had something to do with him bailing on a transfer I think. From wikipedia:

In March 2007 he signed a contract with IK Start but three-months later, having never played a game for the club, he signed for AS Saint-Étienne. Start brought the matter to FIFA and on 3 December 2007 Sall was handed a four-month ban due to start in July 2008 and Saint-Étienne were ordered to pay $150,000 in compensation to the Norwegian club.
