Youri Tielemans fails his Arsenal audition as Leicester continue to exist in limbo

As Youri Tielemans left the Emirates Stadium pitch, he was given a standing ovation — but not just by the Leicester City fans.

“Youri Tielemans, we’ll see you next week,” sang the Arsenal supporters, euphoric as their side dispatched Tielemans and his team-mates with alarming ease. “You’re gonna play for the Arsenal,” others sang.

Wisely, Tielemans, who was substituted after an hour, kept his head down and quickly sat down because despite the home fans’ adulation, if this had been an audition he wouldn’t be getting a callback.

It was one of those ironies in football, that with the transfer window still open, Tielemans faced the club that has been courting him all summer, but still haven’t committed to making a move. There was also irony in the fact that, in facing Arsenal, he went directly up against a man whose own future could dictate his.

Arsenal have already spent £117 million on five new signings this summer as they continue to back Mikel Arteta’s squad overhaul, but while The Athletic understands there is a mutual attraction between Arsenal and Tielemans, a move may only be made if the Gunners can make room in their squad by moving on Granit Xhaka. Currently, that doesn’t look likely as the Switzerland international seems reborn in a more advanced role.

The two went head-to-head in the red-hot heat of the midfield battle and it was a no contest. Tielemans struggled to influence the game in any way, while Xhaka was a constant menace, breaking into the box untracked repeatedly, setting up Gabriel Jesus for the first goal and scoring the third himself, all while Tielemans was left watching in his wake.

It was like watching a repeat of Lorenzo Pellegrini’s display against Tielemans in both legs of the Conference League semi-final, when the Roma captain would track Tielemans when Leicester had the ball to nullify his ability to dictate their play, and then athletically and aggressively break beyond him to cause havoc.

There is no question Tielemans is a fantastic technical player and he remains the midfield schemer that makes Leicester tick when he is on form and given the space. Often he is still effective even when he isn’t given space, but there is one area of his game that has always been a weakness — a lack of running power and strength.

That isn’t to say he isn’t athletic. He still regularly clocks up 12km per game in his No 8 role (although he naturally plays deeper than Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the same position on the left), but he is not a power midfielder in the modern mould who can win duels and disrupt the opposition as well.

When Leicester signed Tielemans, he made an immediate impact and his quality was clear, leading many to wonder why he hadn’t been able to get a game in the Monaco side. It was because there were question marks about his physicality, even in Ligue 1.

Tielemans’ agents believe he can play at a much higher level than Leicester, at a big club that regularly competes in the Champions League. Given the right role, he can.

Tielemans also has that self-belief. At the age of 25 and having spent three and a half seasons at Leicester, he obviously feels the time is right for that challenge. That’s why he has refused to sign a new contract and allowed his current deal to drift into its final year.

Sometimes players find a ceiling. They reach their natural level, and that is usually because there may be a facet of their game that is lacking to truly propel them to the highest plateau. That seems the case for Tielemans and it could partly explain why the types of clubs he would like to join haven’t made a move for him.

The other deterrent may be how much the deal would cost, both in Leicester’s determination to recoup a large chunk of their club-record investment in Tielemans, and the player’s own personal demands.

It was clear in pre-season that Brendan Rodgers was planning for this campaign with the likelihood that Tielemans would move on. Often as the friendlies progressed he had a defined starting XI in his mind, an A and a B team that would swap over in games and even play simultaneous fixtures. The A team and Rodgers went to Preston while the B team and assistant Chris Davies went to Derby County. Tielemans was in that second squad.

Wilfred Ndidi was in that side too, as he worked on regaining his fitness after injury, and he is a nailed-on starter at the base of the midfield. However, Rodgers has stated that he no longer wants to use James Maddison out wide. He needs his creativity in a central position and used Maddison, who has worked on his own physicality, and Dewsbury-Hall as No 8s in a 4-3-3 system; one that he has been forced to abandon without the width of injured winger Harvey Barnes, and no other natural wide men to choose from.

There would have been a very real prospect of Leicester starting the season with Tielemans on the bench had Barnes remained fit, and when he returns it could be the case that Rodgers’ plan A returns.

It would have been inconceivable a year ago to think of a Leicester starting line-up without Tielemans in it when he is available, but Leicester have started to think beyond him now.

They are looking to the future, but what the future holds for Tielemans remains to be seen over.

This wasn't going to happen once Vieira was signed. The way Xhaka is playing is something both Vieira and to a slightly lesser extent ESR could do. I thought there was a slight chance they'd maybe sign him at the end of the window if they couldn't get a winger but they most likely will get a winger.

Tielemans was finally able to see the light when he got out of Xhaka's pocket and straight into Leicester's bench.

Still it would be nice to have him as a squad backup a better alternative than Elneny, but he is not displacing Xhaka from the starting lineup. That was glaringly obvious on Saturday.

It was similar domination from Xhaka toward another A-M favourite, Ruben Neves. In fact it was such a massive domination by Xhaka that it caused his biggest fan in @OnlyOne to take a short sabatical from here :)

For those who couldn't see what some of us meant when we questioned how much some of the targets would be an improvement over Xhaka, that match was it. That was the proof.

Tielemens should be cheap though, guys like Neves you'd have to spend almost twice as much and you wouldn't be getting a transformative player.

Tielemans seems to be a good example of a player who goes viral on social media (for some reason beyond his ability). I don’t know if we are or ever have been interested in him. I hope not. He is slow and error prone. He’s not at the level of our back ups IMO, never mind our starters.
Maybe something about him I am missing, who knows.

Again we don't need to move xhaka to buy Tielemans we have 4 central midfielders For 3 competition that short 1 injury and we screwed and have to overplay people. If they don't want to buy him that fine but it's massive risk considering how injury prone Partey is how bad Elneny is even if we play Vieira there or Zinchenko mean we'll be short in LB and number 10 position 💀.

We won’t be short in number 10. We have ESR.

But agree on Zinchenko.

I just don't want to experience last season stuff we were close to get top 4 if showed more ambition. Injures happen and we'll be in trouble.
I know. I want to sign Tielemans too!
And Pino. Both sound like good deals to increase competition and depth.

Ofcourse I’d prefer a gun DM like Frenkie De Jong. But that’s apparently not gonna happen.
