On this day four years ago, Mikel Arteta made his Arsenal debut. After joining on deadline day from Everton, Arteta replaced the injured Jack Wilshere in the lineup for the side’s 1-0 win over Swansea at the Emirates Stadium, and the Spaniard still has fond memories of that day and the day he arrived at the club.
He has grown in stature at Arsenal in the years since, and was named club captain at the beginning of last season. Arteta said wearing the captain’s armband has been an “honour and privilege.”
“It has been a dream and a real pleasure to be part of this club,” the Spaniard told Arsenal Player. “I was always an Arsenal supporter when I was in England because I loved the club’s philosophy and I wanted to enjoy this club.
“I think I have been developing every year to be more and more important to the point where I’m the Arsenal captain, which is something I’m really privileged and honoured to do.”
“Last year I had some difficult moments with my injury, but I have managed to win trophies – which [the club] didn’t do for nine years – and be a big part of this club so I’m really happy.”
To celebrate four years since Arteta joined the club, let’s relive his best three moments in an Arsenal shirt.
