Manchester United are facing competition from Schalke in the race to sign Mesut Ozil.

The Arsenal midfielder is expected to run down his contract which expires at the end of the season. It had appeared Ozil was set to join the Red Devils with the German able to leave the Emirates free of charge in the summer.

However, the 29 year-old who enjoyed a brief stint in Schalke’s youth system more than a decade ago could now be in line for a return to his former side.

Schalke chief Clemens Tonnies says the club will explore the opportunity to sign Ozil as his return ‘would be a nice story’.

Speaking to Kicker, Tonnies said of the Gunners playmaker: ‘I can imagine a return quite well. If there would be a possibility we would think about it.

Ozil performed superbly for Arsenal during their 2-0 victory over Tottenham on Saturday. The former Real Madrid playmaker grabbed his third assist of the season for Arsenal’s opener and was dangerous throughout.
