Arsenal legend Gilberto Silva believes Lucas Torreira has the potential to be Arsenal’s N’Golo Kante.

The Uruguay international arrived at the Emirates this summer, but he’s still yet to make his full debut for the club.

Torreira received high praise for his sparkling displays in the World Cup this summer. It followed a superb campaign for Sampdoria in Serie A last season, which ultimately earned him his move to north London.

To his own admission, Arsene Wenger had attempted to sign N’Golo Kante from Leicester in 2016 to help the Gunners become more robust at the back. However, the Frenchman was snapped up by Chelsea.

But two years on, Arsenal ‘Invincible’ Gilberto reckons the Gunners have now found their Kante.

I watched him [Torreira] in the World Cup,’ said the Brazilian (via 101GreatGoals).

Torreira is yet to start a game for Arsenal.

‘He did a very good job. If you see the way he plays, he plays the game very simply. He makes things easy for himself on the field.’

‘Of course, you have Kante at Chelsea.’

‘He’s a small player. It’s about how smart they are to play in this position, to find the best ball to give, play nice and simple.’

Responding to whether Torreira has what it takes to emulate Kante, Gilberto said:

‘I hope so. The Premier League is not easy. You have to work hard to be considered a top player and progress game to game, season to season.’

‘But he’s got the potential. We saw that at the World Cup, where he did a great job for Uruguay.’

‘Not only this position but football has changed a lot. The way it’s played, the passion of the Premier League, it’s totally different from 10-15 years ago but you have to try and adapt.’
