Former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry says his former club “badly” wanted to him to stay despite his departure this summer.

The German began breaking into the Arsenal team in 2013/14 with some impressive league performances and even scoring in a win against Swansea at The Liberty Stadium.

However, Gnabry suffered a series of injuries after and rarely featured again.

The 21-year-old was loaned out to West Brom last season, but struggled to make an impact. Baggies boss Tony Pulis even deemed the winger not “at the level” to play for West Brom.

Gnabry opted to join Werder Bremen this summer for £5 million, much to the reluctance of Arsene Wenger.

“It was the right decision,” Gnabry told Kicker of his Arsenal exit. “Everybody who compares my development over the last four months to my time in England before that can’t come to a different conclusion.

“That was the main reason for the transfer – I wanted to get more playing time and it worked.

“Arsenal wanted to keep me, badly, but I had to look after my development.

Gnabry has scored five in 11 league matches for his new side, earning a call-up to the German national team where he scored the first hat-trick by a debutant in 40 years in an 8-0 win over San Marino.
