Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka says the Gunners “were too scared” as they let slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against Watford.

The Gunners were bossing the game at half time against Watford, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goals giving them a 2-0 lead at Vicarage Road.

Two season’s ago Arsenal were heavily criticised by Hornets striker Troy Deeney who claimed Arsene Wenger’s side lacked cojones.

Since then Emery has been slammed for maintaining the soft underbelly of an Arsenal team that conceded 51 Premier League goals last season.

His side had been cruising following a first-half double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had put the Gunners in control against the Premier League’s bottom club.

But the Hornets dominated the second period – and rained in 23 shots – as Arsenal collapsed.

Xhaka, the Arsenal captain, was asked what had gone wrong. “That’s a good question,” he said. “At half‑time we went to the dressing room and everything was good. Everyone was happy but we came out and played such a bad second half. You have to say we are happy to take a point.

“We were scared in the second half. We knew they would come at us and push us hard but we have to show more character and not be scared. We have spoken about it. We cannot give a performance like this in the second half.”

Gooners, after hearing from the captain himself that Arsenal didn’t have the stomach for Watford, what do you think needs to change? Let us know in the comments…
