Emirates Stadium, London – Arsenal maintained their perfect start to the Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Greek side Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium, securing their second victory in this year’s competition. Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and a late strike from Bukayo Saka proved decisive in a match that tested the North London side’s resolve, especially in the second half.

Mikel Arteta made six wholesome changes to his starting XI from the previous Premier League outing, showcasing the exceptional depth of his squad. Captain Martin Ødegaard returned to lead the team, with Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ben White, William Saliba, Mikel Merino, and Gabriel Martinelli all coming into the side.

Arsenal started brightly and took the lead in the 12th minute. A powerful run and shot from striker Viktor Gyökeres hit the post, and Gabriel Martinelli was perfectly placed to tap home the rebound for his third goal of the season. The Gunners dominated the first half, but were indebted to a magnificent save from David Raya to deny Daniel Podence an equaliser, keeping the narrow lead intact.

As the match wore on, and with Olympiacos pushing for a goal, Arteta turned to his bench, introducing key players to regain control and freshness. The strength in depth was highlighted by the impact of  substitutions, with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Eberechi Eze entering the fray.

The second half was marred by a worrying moment for the hosts when defender Gabriel Magalhães was forced to leave the pitch. The Brazilian centre-back went down following an awkward collision with goalkeeper David Raya as both players went for a high ball, with the keeper landing on top of the defender. Gabriel was substituted as a precaution, which allowed young defender Cristhian Mosquera to enter the action, further showcasing the club’s defensive options.

The nerves around the Emirates were finally settled in the 92nd minute. A high press won the ball back for Arteta’s men, and Captain Ødegaard slipped a perfectly weighted pass to Bukayo Saka, who drilled the ball low through the legs of the goalkeeper to seal the 2-0 victory.

The inclusion of promising youngsters like Myles Lewis-Skelly in the starting lineup, and the presence of names such as Ethan Nwaneri and the exciting Max Dowman among the unused substitutes, underscores Mikel Arteta’s belief in the club’s emerging talent. Furthermore, the availability of international quality on the bench, including Jurriën Timber, Ricardo Calafiori, Christian Nørgaard, and experienced goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, is a testament to the club’s summer business and squad building.

Arteta’s men now sit proudly atop their Champions League league phase standings with two wins from two, the hard-fought victory over Olympiacos serving as a gritty, but ultimately successful, demonstration of their collective strength and depth.
