Arsenal penned Mesut Ozil to a new deal last month, but the club’s fortunes have failed to improve since.

As a result of last weekend’s League Cup final defeat, the Gunners have now won just four of their previous 13 matches in all competitions.

Like the rest of the side, Ozil’s performances have been bog-standard. However, following the departure of Alexis Sanchez to Man Utd, the German has become Arsenal’s highest ever paid player, earning a reported £350,000-a-week in wages.

And legendary Arsenal striker and BBC Sport pundit Ian Wright believes the German benefited from Sanchez’s departure as it forced Arsenal to give in to his demands.

“At the end of the day I was very surprised that he signed,” Wright said on BBC Radio 5 Live (via Express).

Ian Wright says Arsenal were forced to agree to Ozil’s demands

“On a free I think he would be worth it in a team like that (Man City).

“The fact is there wasn’t enough takers, maybe he realised that after the fact that Sanchez has gone.“So then what happens is Arsenal couldn’t afford to lose both of them.“So he finds himself in a position where he signs this massive contract.”

Ozil cost Arsenal £42.5m in a move from Real Madrid in 2013. The Germany international holds the record for Premier League assists since his move from Spain.
