Is he the answer to Arsenal’s striker situation?

Theo Walcott has been in great form since his return from injury, getting himself in amongst the goals and staking his claim for the centre forward spot at Arsenal. He bagged four goals in his last two matches of last season including one in the FA Cup final against Aston Villa, and took his form into preseason this summer scoring against Everton and Wolsfburg.

Wenger said after Arsenal’s demolition of Lyon that there is no real need for another striker at the club, saying the team is capable of scoring goals. Walcott’s goal yesterday gave Arsenal the victory over Wolfsburg and lifted the Emirates Cup for the club. Arsene Wenger afterwards said he is unsure of Walcott’s best position but hinted that he may be the answer in the centre forward position.

In a Sky Sports report, Wenger confirmed a deal is in place and moving closer to keep the player at the club, and said Walcott’s game lends itself to multiples positions in the attacking third. He said this when asked where Walcott best fits into the side:

“It’s a good question because it’s a complicated answer. I think in all the three positions.”

“If you ask him where he loves to play, I believe that even he will say that it depends a little bit on the period. Sometimes he prefers left. When I’ve played him on the left, he likes it as well because if he makes a good run he can score goals as well.”

“In his ideal world, he would like to play with a strong guy next to him, a player who is very strong physically, and play off him.”

“He’s not an aggressive striker, he’s a mobile striker. He’s the striker who lives from the quality of his movement and the speed of his movement.”

With Wenger coy on attacking transfer targets, it may be Walcott who gets the nod in centre forward alongside Olivier Giroud. He has shown he is a consistent finisher, and his pace and movement make him a real nightmare for defenders. His intelligent runs in behind make him a good option, as he pulls defences out of shape.
