Ivan Gazidis has resigned as Arsenal’s chief executive to join AC Milan.

Speculation that the 54 year-old had been a target for AC had been mounting for some time.

Gazidis, who helped appoint Unai Emery in May as Arsene Wenger’s successor as manager, will begin his new role in Italy on 31 October.

Speaking to the media, Gazidis said the decision to depart the Emirates has been “the hardest of my life”.

“Change and succession is not only inevitable for a club like Arsenal – it is necessary,” he said.

Gazidis has consistently been accused by some supporters of prioritising profit over performance but his parting message to those associated with the club spoke of a decade-long emotional rollercoaster.

It’s uncertain whether Arsenal will appoint a like-for-like replacement for the Greek.

Raul Sanllehi, who was head of football relations at Arsenal has been appointed head of football. Meanwhile, Vinai Venkatesham has moved from chief commercial officer to managing director.
