Gareth Southgate has made a mistake by not selecting Jack Wilshere for his World Cup squad.

That’s the view of former teammate Simon Francis.

Wilshere, who played alongside Francis during his loan spell at Bournemouth was omitted from the Three Lions 23-man squad for Russia next month.

Francis believes Wilshere is the most technically gifted midfielder at Southgate’s disposal and says the England boss has made an error in overlooking the Arsenal man.

“Playing with him first hand and seeing the ability that he possesses, I can’t help but feel that England would need that,” said Francis (via Sky Sports)

Wilshere was omitted from Southgate’s England squad.

“They might have seen it as a risk but, for me, you have to take risks in international football.

“To be in that hole picking the ball up and looking to unlock defences at that level, there is nobody better really when they’re fully fit than Jack Wilshere.”

The Gunner has been a key man in Arsenal’s season. After returning to the side in September, the 26 year-old started 12 league games and featured in 38 in all competitions.

However, Wilshere had a disappointing return of goal contributions – he scored two and picked up five assists this season.
