Samuel Barrott has had a quick rise through the leagues, having only been refereeing in the Conference during the 2019/20 season, meaning this will only be the third time he has overseen a match involving Luton Town and the first time for a match involving Arsenal. Tonight will, however, be his sixth match refereeing a Premier League encounter of the season.

His first match involving Luton Town came at Blundell Park last season in the FA Cup, when they lost 3-0 to the Mariners in front of a crowd of 7,051. He showed 5 yellow cards that day, including two for Luton Town players who are currently out on loan: Louie Watson (on loan at Charlton Athletic) and Fred Onyedinma (on loan at Rotherham United).

His second match involving Luton was also his second of the season in the Premier League this year, when they drew 2-2 at the City Ground versus Nottingham Forest. He brandished three yellow cards on that occasion, all of which were for the hosts.

His record last season:

Matches: 40
Yellow Cards: 118 (2.95)
Red Cards: 4

During the 2022/23 season, he showed 6 yellow cards on three occasions: Walsall 1-0 Northampton Town in League Two (including a booking for former Luton striker Danny Hylton), Accrington Stanley 1-1 Oxford United in League One and Hartlepool United 0-2 Crawley Town in League Two.

So far this season:

Matches: 15
Yellow Cards: 57 (3.80)
Red Cards: 2

Barrott has been the man with the whistle on 15 occasions so far this season, showing 57 yellow cards and 2 red cards. He was most card-happy in the Championship match between West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City (3-2) when he showed 7 yellow cards, including a booking for former Luton loanee Alex Palmer.
