On this day in 1999, Arsenal’s greatest ever goal scorer announced himself on the European stage. A young Thierry Henry came off the bench to grab the second goal in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Swedish side AIK Fotboll (then AIK Solna) in a group stage match. It was a tight affair, and Arsenal grabbed the lead through Freddie Ljungberg before being pegged back by a Krister Nordin equalizer. It was the substitute tandem of Henry and Kanu who combined to great effect deep into stoppage time, when a long hopeful ball landed at the feet of the lanky Nigerian.

He held off a defender before stabbing the ball into the patch of Henry who dispatched cooly to restore the lead for Arsene Wenger’s men. Davor Suker added the finishing touches on what was a memorable night for Arsenal. Re-live the whole match down below.

It was of course the first of many for Henry, and any day is a good day to re-live a landmark.
