Paul Merson believes Arsenal will beat Liverpool on Friday night.

The two teams clash for the first time since the Reds humiliated Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield back in August.

Since then the sides have traded places in the Premier League, but it is Jurgen Klopp’s side who go into the tie ahead by just one point.

The Gunners have been a force at home this season, winning eight of their nine league games so far. And Merson is backing his old side come out on top.

“So hard to predict with these two,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“One thing you can be sure of is there will be goals.

“Some big games fizzle out, but this isn’t one of them. More often than not it delivers.

“Arsenal still make chances, they are just not putting the ball in the back of the net, and Liverpool, of course, are dangerous on the counter.

“Going forward they are immense, but defensively they aren’t as strong.

“Arsenal could wipe the floor with Liverpool, and vice versa. Horrible game to predict. 2-1.”

Arsenal are set to welcome Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back to the Emirates. The former Gunner who made the switch to Anfield this summer has settled in under Jurgen Klopp and is being deployed as a central midfielder – his preferred role.

Gooners will be hoping Jack Wilshere and co can keep the England international quiet.
