Arsenal’s ongoing volatile relationship with Mesut Ozil has recently taken its latest twist.
The midfielder, who shocked the football world by announcing his retirement from international football this summer has failed to hit back at his critics by delivering on the pitch.
In fact, not even his new manager Unai Emery is giving him the time of day following a suspected training ground bust up last week.
Ozil was dropped for the visit of West Ham on Saturday – a game which saw the Gunners claim their first points of the season.
However, pundit Alejandro Moreno says Arsenal are not good enough to discard a player of Ozil’s calibre.
“And that in this case is Mesut Ozil, because the guy just re-signed, and he’s making a chunk of money and he has been comfortable for many years.
“And if you’re Unai Emery, you’re trying to work in a way in which you can use the talent of this player and you can use his abilities.
“But if he doesn’t fit your mentality, if he doesn’t fit the psychology of the team that you want to implement, if he doesn’t fit your overall plans, then it becomes that idea of a little give and take.
“And so, do you work around it? Or do you simply say ‘we’re not going to use you’?
“I think he’s too good of a player to just say ‘we’re not going to use you’.
“And I don’t think that Arsenal is good enough of a team to just say ‘you know what Mesut? We don’t need you’.”
