Former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta has lifted the lid on why he rejected the Gunners job last year, as well as Newcastle this summer.

The Manchester City assistant coach was heavily linked with replacing Arsene Wenger as boss after spending five years in the red half of north London.

He held extensive talks about succeeding Wenger before opting to remain in Manchester.

Speaking to SER Catalunya (via Metro Sport) about turning down Arsenal, the Man City coach said: “Yes, there have been some things, but the decision I have made is that I am very happy where I am.

Mikel Arteta lifted two FA Cups and two community shields with Arsenal

“I feel very valued and fulfilled. And the road will continue here.”

Rafa Benitez left Newcastle shortly after the climax of 2018/19. Asked if he was close to replacing Rafa in the summer, Arteta added: “Sometimes, I was about to leave, but I stopped myself.

“The first [time] was different, the second was mostly me.”

Gooners, do you think Arteta would have made a good manager? Let us know in the comments…
