Mikel Arteta might be about to offer Shkodran Mustafi a surprise Arsenal lifeline, reports Sky Sports.
The German had looked destined for the exit door having fallen out of favour with Galatasaray touted as a destination.
Mustafi has been limited to only one start in the Premier League this season, against Norwich during Freddie Ljungberg’s interim spell.
But the new Gunners boss has a host of injuries to deal with which may see him stick with Mustafi.
“Can we afford [ to lose a centre-back]?” Arteta said The ideal scenario is no.
“If it happens, we will have to invent something. We are already playing with full-backs that are not full-backs.
“They are wingers or central midfielders and could we afford to lose full-backs? No, but we don’t have any full-backs.”
Despite Mustafi bearing the brunt of criticism from Arsenal fans, he is not the worst when it comes to making mistakes.
Since the start of the 2016/17 season, the defender has made three errors leading to goals in the league, while Granit Xhaka tops the chart with seven.
