Arsenal avoided FA Cup embarrassment by successfully seeing off Portsmouth in the FA Cup fifth round.

Boss Mikel Arteta has hailed Reiss Nelson as a “special player” after he set up both Arsenal goals in a scrappy 2-0 win at Portsmouth.

Sokratis and Eddie Nketiah neatly tucked home Nelson’s crosses as the Gunners reached the quarter-finals.

Boss Arteta told BT Sport: “It’s a difficult place to come but I have faith in these kids.

Nelson was superb at Portsmouth

“We have pace in a few players up front. Reiss is a special player and can eliminate players one on one.

“He’s been out for a while but he’s back now and he showed what he’s capable of doing.

“I’m really enjoying working with this group of players. I’m seeing a lot of things I’m happy with but there is a lot of room to improve.”

Nelson has struggled to claim a regular spot in the Arsenal lineup this season and recent injuries have withheld his progress.

However, not fit again, Arsenal fans would have been encouraged for the future following his performance on the south-coast on Monday night.
