Mikel Arteta was impressed with the performance of Granit Xhaka in Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Burnley.

The Gunners extended their unbeaten run to seven matches with the draw at Turf Moor but with so many draws, Arteta’s side are still trailing 4th placed Chelsea by 10 points.

The game itself was pretty dire and fans would have been better off looking to play jackpotjoy sister sites rather than watching the football.

Xhaka has been a consistent figure under Arteta since the boss arrived in December.

Arteta beleives Xhaka ‘did well’ on Sunday

The midfielder’s Arsenal career looked in tatters after he fell out of favour in the club last autumn when he swore at fans and had the armband stripped from him by former manager Unai Emery.

The 27-year-old looked set to leave north London with a return to the Bundesliga for Hertha Berlin becoming almost inevitable.

However, Arteta convinced Xhaka to stay with Arsenal and the Swiss is repaying the faith instilled in him.

Arsenal’s boss singled Xhaka out for praise following the Burnley draw and was pleased with the “resilience” his side showed in defence. However, he insisted they needed to improve their quality on the ball, the calmness of their approach and their end product.

Xhaka’s career at Arsenal had looked at its end

Arteta told Match of the Day 2: “In periods of the game, yes I liked it, but in other periods I did not. We started to give free-kicks, throw-ins, corners away and in that they are better than us.

“I learned a lot about the resilience we showed in defence and also that we need to improve the quality of our play, be calmer and improve the end product.

“They are very good at chipping the ball forward, the best way to stop it is to have control of the ball.

“It did disturb the way we wanted to attack but it’s not an excuse. Granit [Xhaka] played there and did well.

“In the offensive part of our game, we have to do better for longer periods of the game.”
