Former Arsenal target Monchi had ‘no Plan B’.

That’s the message from Roma president James Pallotta who laid down the gauntlet on his former sporting director.

Monchi, 50, appeared on course to join Arsenal and would have been a strong bet for your Bethard bonus code before he decided to snub the Gunners last minute to re-join Sevilla.

And Pallotta has criticised Monchi for his decision to hit out at Roma’s hierarchy.

‘I was kind of surprised to read Monchi say at his press conference that he wanted to go one way and I wanted to go another way,’ said Pallotta (via Metro Sport)

Monchi had been on course for the vacant technical director role at Arsenal

‘I appreciate that Monchi never set out to fail at Roma but I want to make something very clear; right from the start, I was very clear about the direction I wanted us to go in and that’s why we spent a lot of money bringing Monchi in.

‘From the start, I said I wanted first-class coaches, first-class performance staff, first-class medical staff, first-class scouting and recruitment and a first-class football organisation.

‘I gave Monchi the keys to deliver that. I gave him 100 percent control to appoint the coach he wanted, to employ the assistant coaches and the performance staff, to manage the scouting and to bring in the players he wanted.

Monchi has now completed his return to Sevilla after two years away

‘If you look at our results and our performances, it’s clear that this hasn’t worked.

‘In November, when our season was going from bad to worse and everyone could see that the coach was struggling to get a reaction out of the players, I asked Monchi for his Plan B should things continue to get worse.

Having missed out on Marc Overmars as well, Arsenal are still looking for a new director of football. The Gunners may now choose to promote internally to fix their vacancy problem.

They may well have to wait until the summer to find their man and the challenge that awaits him could be potentially very different.

Will he come into a team of Europa League winners with a Champions League campaign to look forward to, or will be another season outside of the top four and another year in Europe’s second-tier competition?
