Jose Mourinho has revealed the reason Alexis Sanchez left Arsenal for Man Utd last month.

The 29 year-old ended a three-and-a-half stint at the Emirates to link up with Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Sanchez, who had run his Arsenal contract down to within five months of expiry arrived as a straight swap for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Chilean spent the first half of the campaign playing Europa League football after Arsenal failed to finish in the top four last term. Meanwhile, Arsenal have struggled for consistency in the league this season.

And Mourinho says the pull of Champions League football was enough to lure Sanchez to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

“Manchester United in the Champions League is quite a big thing,” said Mourinho (via the Express)

Sanchez quit the Emirates last month.

“We always want to play against the best teams and this is why we like this competition.

“So, Alexis wanted to come to a team in order to play in the Champions League.”

Sanchez has scored once in the league from three appearances for the Red Devils.

The Chile international will be eligible to compete against Sevilla in the Champions League last 16. United are favourite to progress to the quarter-final stage but Mourinho is expecting two tough games against Vincenzo Montella’s Sevilla.

“I don’t think it’s possible to score 6 here [as he did with Real Madrid],” he said.
