Gary Neville has named Arsenal star Eddie Nketiah as the Premier League’s most surprising player of the season.

THE LOWDOWN: EQUAL TO THE TASK

Nketiah became Arsenal’s second-choice striker after the arrival of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City in the summer.

The youngster has started in the cup and Europa league games while making substitute appearances in the league this earlier this term.

However, the unfortunate injury to Jesus at the World Cup handed the  Englishman the opportunity to start in the Premier League and he has been able to justify his shirt during that time scoring goals aplenty.

THE LATEST: MOST SURPRISING PLAYER

When asked who has surprised him the most, Neville told The Overlap: ”I’m going to go Nketiah. I thought when Jesus got injured I thought that could be a problem. I think he’s played really well for Arsenal.”

With nine goals in all competitions, Nketiah is currently Arsenal’s top scorer this season but the striker wasn’t quite happy with his side’s performance in the defeat at Everton.

‘Everyone’s disappointed of course,’ said Nketiah after the Goodison Park setback. ‘We want to win every game, especially for the travelling fans who came to support us. We wanted to give them all three points but unfortunately, we couldn’t do that.

‘I think their support all year has been excellent. It’s not an easy place to come to and travel up here so we’re grateful for them. Hopefully, we can reward them with three points on Saturday.”

THE VERDICT: GOOD FOR THE TEAM

Having Nketiah come off age in the absence of the Brazilian has helped the Gunners maintain their title charge.

All fears after the injury to Jesus are now gone seeing the way the Englishman has been able to deliver. Arteta will hope for more exciting performances from the youngster as we enter the business end of the season.
