Arsenal cannot rely on Mesut Ozil to move forward.

That’s the message from Andy Gray, who blasted the midfielder following the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

Ozil played the full 90 minutes but was generally ineffective against the Premier League champions.

After announcing a shock retirement from international football last month, many hoped and expected the German to fight back and prove his doubters wrong on the opening day.

However, the 29 year-old gave a sub-par performance as Unai Emery was denied a dream start to his Arsenal career.

Gray was disappointed with both Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and reckons Arsenal could struggle badly on the evidence of their performance.

Bernardo Silva celebrates City’s second

The beIN SPORTS pundit said: “If ever there was a player that you thought with a new coach in, you would see a bit of life in him, a spark and a difference it was Mesut Ozil. And I didn’t.

“Mkhitaryan might as well have been sitting here.

“I didn’t see a change in their mentality and attitude and I thought I would.

“You can play really badly, that’s fine but what was your mentality and attitude like.

“The attitude looked exactly the same as it was when Arsene [Wenger] was getting hammered.

“If Arsene had been in charge, the fans would have booed them off the pitch.

“Unai Emery needs a bit of time but on that performance, they are way off.”
