Arsenal legend Paul Merson got into a heated exchange with Dion Dublin after claiming his old side have no ambition to win the Premier League.
Instead, Merson believes Unai Emery’s sole target this season was to get his new club into the top four and secure a return to Champions League football. Whereas the pundit believes Manchester United were aiming for Premier League glory.
The Gunners are on track to finish in the top four this season after beating Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s in-form United side. With just eight games to go, Emery’s side are 4th and one point adrift of arch rivals Tottenham.
Despite this though, Merson believes Arsenal do not have the ambition to win the league. But Ex-Premier League striker Dublin believes every team out of the top six targets the league title at the beginning of the season.
Speaking on Sky Sports with Geoff Shreeves, the pair got into a heated debate over the team’s goals.
“It’s got to the stage over the last seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13 years – ‘get in the top four’. Not win it, get in the top four.”
Merson: “I was very fortunate, I played at Arsenal, an unbelievable football club, unbelievable football club.
Shreeves: “They all set out to win it.”
Merson: “How? Do you really honestly think they all set out to win it?
“Do you think Arsenal set out to win the Premier League in your wildest dreams?”
Shreeves: “They all set out to win their games.”
Dublin: “They must have started the season by saying ‘we’ve got to win the Premier League this year’. They must have done.
