Former Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker says the Arsenal players contributed to Arsene Wenger quitting the club this year.

The Frenchman ended his 22 year reign as manager at the end of the 2017/18 season.

Wenger came under intense scrutiny after a string of poor results that led to the club dropping out of the Premier League top four.

Per Mertesacker, who captained Arsenal under Wenger’s reign on several occasions, has recently admitted that the players should take some responsibility for Wenger’s departure, as they “had many chances to get better results.”

Speaking about Wenger’s announcement to leave, Arsenal youth team coach Mertesacker said: “That was very surprising for all of us.

Mertesacker captained Arsenal for six years

“He came into the meeting room and said that together with the bosses he had decided to quit the end of the season.

“It was a sad moment because I felt like I’d done my part.“His departure was the fault of us players because we had many opportunities to get better results.

“We failed while he always stood in front of us.
