Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes Arsene Wenger’s position is secure as long as he continues to make the club money.

Wenger has seen his side fall further behind their rivals this season following Premier League defeats to Watford, Swansea, and most recently Brighton. Meanwhile, the Gunners crashed out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round at Nottingham Forest and were embarrassed at home by Swedish no-hopes Ostersunds in the Europa League.

Despite the run of form which has seen the club lose seven matches since the turn of the year, Parlour believes the Frenchman will not be sacked by the club as long as Kroenke is making money, and suggests Wenger will only ever leave Arsenal on his own terms.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the former Gunners midfielder said: “Kroenke is not a football fan. He has not been brought up to enjoy football, he’s more into American football and has his franchises in America.

Arsenal were beaten 2-1 at Brighton on Sunday.

“He is at Arsenal for one reason – to make money.

“Not being in the Champions League will affect them because they’re losing out on so much revenue, but whether that’s going to change anything…

“As long as the balance sheets are looking good, I don’t think he’s too worried about what happens [on the pitch].”

Arsenal are 33 points off the Premier League leaders Manchester City and 13 behind fourth-placed Tottenham.

Wenger has one year remaining on his current deal and could well stay to see it out – which is unlikely to go down well with fans.
