Unai Emery suffered a baptism of fire on his Premier League debut.

The Spaniard, who had a very active summer transfer window handed out starts to debutants Matteo Guendouzi and Sokratis Papastathopolous at the Emirates.

While fans may have been hoping for an easier start to the campaign, some had said it may be the best time to play Pep Guardiola’s men.

Unfortunately, the match ran in a similar style to what we’ve become accustomed to under Arsene Wenger  – the Gunners huffed and puffed, but ultimately failed to strike final blow.

And akin to Wenger’s reign, a sloppy defence proved costly. Raheem Sterling and Bernado Silva scoring either side of half-time to give City the win.

In truth, Guardiola’s side were a class above. However, Emery was in positive mood after the game.

”The result was 2-0 but I think on the pitch over the 90 minutes we were getting better,” said the Spaniard afterwards.

“The first half we didn’t play like we wanted. We spoke at half-time about taking more responsibility for the second half, to do a little more.

“We wanted to build with the ball and break their lines. I think in the second half we played more like we want.”
