Real Madrid came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Arsenal, before taking a 3-2 penalty shoot out win in their final match of the International Champions Cup.
Unai Emery’s side started off superbly after Real full-back Nacho was sent off in the ninth minute – Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang each scoring and continuing their telepathic chemistry to bring up a 2-0 lead.
Arsenal were also reduced to 10 men on 40 minutes when Sokratis was shown a second yellow card.
Real, who had Eden Hazard in the starting line-up, hit back with goals from Bale and Marco Asensio – who was later stretchered off with a knee injury – in the 15 minutes after half-time.
Asensio then tore his cruciate ligament in an innocuous challenge with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in Washington and is set to miss most of next season.
It’s uncertain whether the midfielder’s injury will now scupper a deal for Dani Ceballos who was set to arrive at The Emirates in the next few days.
