Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Arsenal can forget about returning to Champions League football until Arsene Wenger helps his backline by signing a defensive midfielder.

The Gunners lost for the eight time this season in the North London Derby on Saturday. Although, the game at Wembley finished 1-0, the Gunners were fortunate to come out of the contest reasonably unscathed – in truth Tottenham could have had three or four.

It’s now 37 goals conceded this term. But despite the leaky defence, Wenger failed to address the problems in January.

You could argue that Wenger hasn’t utilised a specialist defensive midfielder since Gilberto Silva and Patrick Vieira dominated the middle of the park.

The Gunners have remained sixth in the league, but are now seven points adrift of a Champions League spot. And Redknapp claims the Frenchman can forget returning to the competition if he continues to avoid signing a proven DM.
“Arsenal can have all the pace they like in attack,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.“Until they buy a midfield powerhouse in the vein of Patrick Vieira, they will remain also-rans in the race for the top four.”
