Unai Emery was denied a dream start as Arsenal manager after his side lost 2-0 at home to Manchester City

The Gunners were playing their first competitive game without Arsene Wenger in charge since 1996 but were well beaten by the defending champions.

Emery handed out debuts to Matteo Guendouzi and Sokratis Papastathopolous. Arsenal fans were 19 year-old impressed Guendouzi who worked his socks off throughout.

Goalscorers Sterling and Silva celebrate

England World Cup star Sterling put City ahead in the 14th minute, rifling the ball home from 20 yards.

Left-back Benjamin Mendy, who assisted both goals, pulled the ball back for Bernardo Silva to blast in a second.

Lucas Torreira stepped off the bench to make his first appearance – the Uruguayan helping to shore things up at the back.

It’s a poor start, but with change Arsenal need to time.
