Arsenal have been dealt a huge transfer blow in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.

Mikel Arteta has reportedly pushed the club to make Partey their number 1 target this summer with the 26-year-old having emerged as one of the best centre-midfielders in Europe.

Currently, he has a £45million release clause in his contract with his deal expiring in 2023 and the Gunners were hoping to bring him to the Premier League

However, Atletico have reportedly offered him a new deal on around £79k-a-week until 2025 to ward off Premier League suitors.

Partey, who was sensational for Atletico in their Champions League clashes with Liverpool, now looks set to resign with the Spanish club.

It means Arteta will now have to look elsewhere to bolster his defence.

The Gunners have been urged to turn to West Ham’s Declan Rice by ex-Arsenal man Paul Merson.
