Arsene Wenger did not want Unai Emery to replace him as manager after stepping down.
After 22 years in charge, the Gunners hero left Arsenal at the end of last season and has still not returned to management.
The club spent weeks in finding the right man to fill Wenger’s boots and ultimately chose Emery to lead the new era.
However, according to Italian journalist Ciro Venerato, Wenger had hinted to the Arsenal board that he wanted Carlo Ancelotti to get the job.
He said: “I’ll tell you a behind-the-scenes story dating back to last summer when Arsene Wenger indicated Carlo Ancelotti as his possible heir and successor on the Arsenal bench.
Ancelotti has managed clubs such as AC Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich
“Carlo Ancelotti, as you know, has a Canadian wife and the whole family lives in London.
“He was interested.
“Arsenal then chose Unai Emery and at that point Carlo Ancelotti signed for Napoli, but he did not forget that Arsenal rejected him.”
Ancelotti welcomes Arsenal in just three weeks time when the Gunners travel to Napoli in the Europa League quarter-final first-leg.
