Arsenal invincible Martin Keown has branded Alexis Sanchez as ‘the biggest mercenary in football’ amid his proposed move to Manchester United.

With his contract set to expire, Sanchez was expected to join Manchester City in either this window or at the end of the season. However, the Chilean is now on the verge of joining neighbours Manchester United.

City had reached an agreement for the player last summer, but the deal was scuppered as Arsenal failed to find a suitable replacement.

Pep Guardiola’s side withdrew their interest in the 29 year-old this month with Sanchez seemingly ready to take the opportunity to move to Old Trafford. United are allegedly ready to give the attacker a huge pay-rise over a four-year period.

Writing in his column for the Mail, Keown said: “Sanchez has got to be the biggest mercenary in football.

“Manchester City have wanted to sign Sanchez since the summer and, if no deal is done in January, they will be waiting for him at the end of the season.

“City would be the natural place for Sanchez to go to develop his football. He has worked with Pep Guardiola before.

He later added: “He has probably thought that he will not get a better offer if he waits until the summer.

“So he might as well take the best deal on offer now. It has been all about the money.”
