Hector Moreno has recently been linked with making a move to the Premier League after a successful albeit injury-plagued season with RCD Espanyol. The centre back is one of the mainstays in both his club and country side.

A left-sided centre back, Hector represented UNAM from his youth days. He joined the club popularly known as PUMAS as a 15 year old before moving to AZ Alkmaar in December 2007 for £3m. In a couple of years he cemented his place and subsequently won the Eredivisie with Alkmaar in 2009.

Moreno, like many young footballers, had the dream to play in the Champions League. He made his UCL debut in the year 2010. He represented the club for a further year before moving to RCD Espanyol, neighbours of FC Barcelona.

After coming back from the injury he suffered in the WC against Netherlands (fractured tibia), Moreno has represented Espanyol in all the subsequent matches in LA LIGA which he has been available for. This shows his indispensable place in the side.

In 19 matches in La Liga this term, Hector has won 37% of his tackles. This may seem a lowly figure but you have to take into account the nature of the play in Spain’s premier club competition. Referees tend to give decisions against defenders far more easily.

Moreno has won also an impressive 75% of his take-ons. Though he his aerial numbers are worryingly low, winning just 38% of his duels. That’s a concern for any EPL side looking to sure up their defence. He is disciplined enough to only amass 5 yellow cards in his 19 appearances but does have a solitary red card to blot his copy book.

OUR VERDICT :

Unimpressed. there are better options in the market with the likes of Howedes and Otamendi available.

Howedes would be a perfect signing considering his international experience. He also adds depth to the side as he can double-up as a LB/RB.
