Arsenal chairman Stan Kroenke has revealed the thinking behind appointing Unai Emery as Arsene Wenger’s replacement.

The Spaniard was today officially announced as Arsenal manager following several weeks of the club searching for a man to lead the Gunners into a new era.

For a long time it had looked as if Mikel Arteta was nailed on for the job, but talks broke down over transfer policy.

In the end Arsenal opted for Emery, who won the domestic treble in France this term, as well as three consecutive Europa League trophies with Sevilla.

And Kroenke say he’s impressed with how the 46 year-old conveyed himself during the interview process.

“We’re delighted to welcome Unai to Arsenal. He’s a proven winner,” Kroenke said (via Metro Sport).

It’s now Emery’s Emirates

“We’re confident that he is the right person for the job and that he will work to deliver the triumphs our fans, staff and everyone who cares about Arsenal want.

“Several things stood out during his interview and the entire process; his football knowledge, energy, determination and love of the game.

“His familiarity with our club and our players, the Premier League and the game in Europe were all very impressive.

“He shares our vision to move forward, to build on the platform created by Arsene Wenger and help this club enjoy greater success.”

It’s been well documented that Arsenal’s new boss will have to work on a tight transfer budget this summer. A rumoured £50m is all Emery will have to bolster the squad following a dismal season last time out.
