The partnership between Shkodran Mustafi and Lauren Koscielny was one of admittedly few positives from least season.

The German international took to English football well, and alongside the consistent Frenchman, the pair began to form a pairing that looked as if it would be able to carry Arsene Wenger’s side over the coming years.

The duo even bagged four goals between them, which may not seem like a lot, but that extra contribution from centre-half can make a big difference come the end of the season.

However despite the pairings excellence, it is Rob Holding who most caught my eye in the heart of the Arsenal defence last season. Mature far beyond his years, the Englishman put in some brilliants performances when called upon, none more so than the FA Cup final where he, alongside Per Mertesacker, dominated Chelsea’s front line to help ensure the Gunners lifted the trophy for the third time in five years.

Signed from Bolton for a mere £2.5 million, Holding’s displays have been that of a man who can be the future of Arsenals defence.

Gary Cahill did very much the same after leaving Wanderers for Chelsea, so who is to stay Holding cannot replicate his feat?
