The man to lead Arsenal to Champions League glory

As every Arsenal fan bemoaned our lack of defensive options and midfield injuries, the fact we have no recognised goalkeeper for our Champions League clash with Anderlecht fell below the radar.

Arsene Wenger isn’t able to call upon the services of Wojciech Szczesny due to the Pole’s red card against Galatasary, whilst David Ospina is out of the game due to injury – rather worryingly, the Colombian doesn’t have a return date penciled in yet.

The man that will be hoping to leave Belgium with a clean-sheet will be the relatively unknown Emiliano Martinez.

Martinez spent a spell on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship last season, where he made 11 appearances for the Owls in what is the ‘keeper’s only real substantial taste of first-team action in English football.

At 22, Martinez is now at the age where he will either make it or not at Arsenal and there is no better way to stake a claim and impress Arsene Wenger than by performing well in Arsenal’s must win Champions League clash.

Martinez’s biggest issue will be with how he reassures a back four that is not only very makeshift but also lacking in form. With Calum Chambers expecting to return to the right-back slot after his one-game Premier League ban, that should help steady the ship. However, Per Mertesacker will more than likely be paired with Nacho Monreal at the heart of the defence again and, although the Spaniard was by no means our worse defender against Hull City, I just worry about our towering German alongside anyone other than Laurent Koscielny.

Thankfully we aren’t playing Borussia Dortmund in this current predicament, so, that leaves me with just one more thing to say:

Good luck, Martinez!
