The moment that will define Arsenal’s next era

Arsene Wenger said before Monday night’s clash with United that the match would mean so much more than just football, and that the result would carry much psychological significance. This couldn’t be any more true, as the victory has breathed life into the side. Suddenly, Arsenal look well positioned to win the cup for a second year coming, and have now won 6 of their last 8 matches.

A top two finish in the league is within reach, and you know what? If Arsenal can travel to United and win, who is to say that they can’t pull off a miracle when they travel to the Stade Luis (to face Monaco) and keep their Champions League hopes alive?

Okay, wishful thinking, but such is the belief in the Arsenal camp right now. Monday night was so much more than a berth into the semi-finals and another trip to Wembley, and Danny Welbeck sticking it to Louis van Gaal. It was a massive weight off our shoulders, a mental burden overcome. Monday was Arsenal’s first win over United since May of 2011. It was their first win at Old Trafford since October of 2006.

The fear factor is banished. Massive, massive, statement that is from the lads and huge sigh of relief for Wenger. For years it seemed there was always a mental strain when it came to playing United, and no matter how well  the boys played they could never seem to finish the job. There were no signs of apprehension whatsoever Monday though, and for that gooners are exceptionally proud.

Just as the win against City restored some faith, this one will do as well, but perhaps even more so as the stakes were much higher.

Now for Arsenal however, comes the integral part. Arsenal must build from the win and use it as a springboard. Too many times Arsenal pulls off a big result, only to be swiftly knocked back down to earth by a poor one. We cannot afford any more of those as the business end of the season is upon us.

Monday showed that Arsenal should not be daunted to go anywhere or fear any opponent. The win started Arsenal’s next era. The fearless era. The success era. Wenger’s army has already taken the first steps.
