Arsenal legend Tony Adams says he “doesn’t know what he’s been doing for the last five or six weeks” following his old side’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.
Arsenal were dispatched 2-0 without the champions needing to get into fourth gear on Sunday.
It was the first time in 22 years the north Londoners had walked out without the backing of Arsene Wenger, but it was a case of ‘same old’ when Pep Guardiola’s side came to the Emirates on opening day.
The Gunners, who finished a disappointing sixth last season have often been criticised for their weak defence.
And Adams, who was part of the famous Arsenal back-four, slammed Emery for not building a strong enough defence.
He told talkSPORT: “I don’t know what he’s been doing for the last five or six weeks.
“He’s been rotating all his players and given them all a game.
“And they have got some good results but it is pre-season.
Unai Emery was denied a dream start against Man City
“From minute one I would have picked my goalkeeper and my back four and put the two players I want to screen them in place [so] you’ve got a firm base.
“It’s been missing for the last ten years. I don’t think we won a game away from home last year.
“And that’s an underbelly of a lack of resistance and a lack of resilience.
“I really wanted to [say] ‘go on, do you stuff, you’ve got a chance now Emery to put your team out there, to work with your team. You’ve had five, six weeks of pre-season, go on and get on with it.’
“We all want him to be successful, we all want him to put his team, we all want him to be resilient and challenge for the league title but realistically, we are nowhere near.”
