Top 5 Arsenal ‘upgrades’ on Wojciech Szczesny

Wojciech Szczesny, he’s one of us; he mocks Tottenham, he speaks as a passionate fan would and he clearly loves the club with every defeat affecting him as much as it does you and I.

For the last few seasons, the Polish international has been our No.1 – with the odd spell on the substitutes bench – however, overall, the Poland international has delivered between the sticks.

With that being said, a few concerns were raised over Szczesny’s recent red card against Galatasaray in the Champions League – an almost identical scenario to sending off against Bayern Munich last season.

Arsene Wenger has always liked the ‘high risk, high reward’ strategy with his ‘keepers, but does Wojciech represent the goalkeeper to take us back in amongst the footballing elite?

Fraser Forster

Right, not neccessairly an upgrade – more of an equal to Sir Chesney – however, the former Celtic ‘keeper has taken to life well in the Premier League with Southampton achieving five cleansheets in their opening nine games.

I just think, that with the British core Arsene Wenger is putting together, a move for Forster makes sense.

Asmir Begovic

The Stoke City goalkeeper was the talk of gossip columns about a year or so ago, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, amongst others, being linked with a move for the 27-year-old.

Although those rumours died down, reports have suggested that Real Madrid want to replace Iker Casillas with the Potters goalie. And, of course, if he’s good enough for the Los Blancos then he is good enough for Arsenal!

Guillermo Ochoa

The Mexican ‘keeper was linked with Arsenal throughout the summer transfer window after his several impressive performances at the World Cup.

In the end nothing materialised, however, a few months on from Brazil 2014, the Malaga ‘keeper’s reputation has continued to grow.

David Ospina

If Arsene Wenger was looking to replace Szczesny, maybe he already has the answer closer to home in summer signing David Ospina?

There was a bit of clamour from Arsenal fans for the Colombian international to be given a run of games after impressing during the Galatasaray game.

Petr Cech

At 32, I’m sure a few of you will turn your noses up at Cech, however, at 32, Cech has, easily, another four years in him at the top level.

Arsenal really aren’t in a position either to nuture and grow younger talent, sometimes you need to live in the ‘here and now’ and buy for the next fixture, rather than for next season.

I don’t care that the majority will be saying Chelsea won’t sell to us. Make them.
