Arsenal have been named top contenders in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. With one year left on his Dortmund contract, the Bundesliga star has confirmed he will be leaving the club.

While it seemed for a while that Arsene Wenger had his sights set on Morgan Schneiderlin, Arturo Vidal or Geoffrey Kondogbia to fill a midfield slot, he has now turned his attention back to Gundogan.

The German had been linked previously to Manchester United, but reports suggest that Arsenal are in good standing to sign the 24-year-old in a €27 million deal.

Gundogan was a heavy factor in Dortmund’s 2012-13 campaign, adding four goals and four assists across all competitions. But a spinal injury saw him sit out all but one league game the following season.

This season, despite health issues that lingered into late October, the centre midfielder scored three goals and had five assists for Dortmund. Should this trajectory continue, Gundogan’s strong passing and dribbling could help the Gunners immensely in their push for the Premier League title next season.
