Transfer news: Barcelona target Arsenal defender

According to reports, Barcelona are considering a January move for Nacho Monreal.

The La Liga champions want the defender as back up for Jordi Alba at the Camp Nou.

The news follows Barcelona’s sale of Lucas Digne to Everton. Barca need another full-back, but do not want to spend a significant fee and would prefer a veteran who is content with being Alba’s deputy. Monreal, 32, is out of contract next summer.

With Sead Kolisinac out injured for another month, Monreal’s place in the Arsenal team is secure under new boss Unai Emery for the time being.

The 32-year-old joined from Malaga five years ago and has been a common fixture in the Arsenal line up ever since.

Monreal has featured in three of Arsenal’s four league games this season. The Spaniard notched up a goal in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over West Ham last month.

He is also adaptable having played as a left-sided centre back at times under Arsene Wenger.
