Unai Emery has been slammed for his inability to find a spot for Mesut Ozil in his Arsenal side.

The Gunners boss has infrequently used the German this season, even when Ozil has been fit for action.

Arsenal’s talisman was left out of the squad altogether when the Gunners lost 1-0 away to West Ham on Saturday.

And ESPN’s Steve Nicol cannot believe Emery has not figured out a way to utilise the 30 year-old, particularly when he continues to play Granit Xhaka, someone who is “not even close” to the German’s ability.

“If at the end of the day Unai Emery wants to sweep the club, the board have to back him. I get all that,” Nicol said.

“But are you telling me that you can’t figure a way out to sort your team out when you’ve got a guy with the quality that Ozil’s got?

Ozil has played 13/22 league games so far this season

“You can’t somehow figure out to get him in the team?

“You’ve got a team full of players who work hard and will run for ever, where’s the quality? Where’s all the quality gone?

“You look at the middle of the park, I mean Granit Xhaka, he can’t get around.

“He’s not even close to the qualities of Mesut Ozil.

“So you figure out your team and find a way of building it to get a guy with quality in.”

Ozil, who signed a bumper new contract nearly a year ago will be pushing for a place at home to Chelsea this weekend. It’s an opportunity for the Gunners to close the gap on their top four rivals.
