Arsenal manager Unai Emery was impressed with Mesut Ozil’s performance in the win over BATE Borisov, but has insisted that he will continue to rotate the German in his squad.

Ozil returned for just his first start in 11 matches as Arsenal booked their place in the last 16 of the Europa League.

A 3-0 home win overturned a 1-0 defeat to the Belarusian side who are midway through their pre-season.

There have been calls for Emery to play Ozil and after reinstating him in the team, the manager was full of praise for his playmaker.

He said: “Today Mesut was important and positive for the team and I am happy with the way he played.

“He showed us the performance he wanted us to see and he said to me that he wants to carry on like this and be available to continue helping the team.

However, Emery did claim he will continue to rotate the German in his side.

“We are going to play a lot of matches in the next weeks and sometimes he will be in the starting team and sometimes he will be on the bench,” the Spaniard said.

“But today his spirit was good. His quality, his capacity, his skills and his combinations with the other players were also good.”
