Unai Emery’s Arsenal need to ‘learn’ to be as ‘ruthless’ as Chelsea.

That’s the view of former Gunner Per Mertesacker.

Emery, who replaced legendary manager Arsene Wenger at the Emirates in the summer, has made a bright start to his career in north London.

Upon his retirement at the end of last season, the German World Cup winner has taken on his role as the manager of the Arsenal academy. It is a big job for someone coming straight out of playing the game, but it is one that Mertesacker seems more than up to the challenge.

And the 34 year-old believes Arsenal can learn from Chelsea’s ruthless streak which has seen the Blues win five titles in 13 years.

Mertesacker won three FA Cups with Arsenal

Speaking about Petr Cech’s spell at Stamford Bridge before joining Arsenal, Mertesacker said: ‘His background at Chelsea, that is the way he won.

‘You can feel when we went there it was always tough and we struggled to deal with the intensity and that defensive ruthlessness.

‘We can take that on. We have to learn and adapt to what Chelsea have brought.’

Arsenal have made a bright start to the season, but have still conceded more than a goal per game so far this season.
