Jose Mourinho’s appointment at Tottenham ‘surprised’ Unai Emery.

The Portguese replaced Mauricio Pochettino on Wednesday as Tottenham’s head coach.

Spurs have had a dismal campaign so far this season, winning just six Premier League matches in the calendar year.

Reacting to the change in management at Spurs, Arsenal boss Emery said: ‘I think it’s a surprise how it finished with Pochettino.

‘I don’t know exactly why and how it’s going to change their performance.

Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham on Tuesday

‘[Jose] is a very good coach, his career is strong with titles and experience and I think also Pochettino working in Tottenham was amazing.’

Asked whether he was surprised by Pochettino’s sacking, Emery said: ‘Yes, for me it was a surprise.

The Times claim that Mourinho, who signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Tottenham on Wednesday morning, had reservations over working under the Gunners hierarchy, claiming that the structure of the club “did not appeal” to him.

Mourinho’s Tottenham face London rivals West Ham on Saturday while Arsenal welcome Southampton to the Emirates.
